State representative says Obama e-mail "racist"
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Officials in the Oklahoma House have formally reprimanded a state legislative assistant for sending an e-mail about Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama that a black lawmaker says is racist.
House Chief of Staff Chad Warmington says Jane Mitchell was reprimanded for violating House policies that prohibit the distribution of partisan, campaign, racist or offensive materials on state-owned equipment.
Mitchell is Republican Rep. Doug Cox's legislative assistant.
Democratic Rep. Mike Shelton of Oklahoma City, who is black, demanded a public apology over the e-mail which he says is racist, offensive and inappropriate.
The e-mail is in the form of a knock-knock joke. It reads: "Knock knock. Who's there? Eyes. Eyes who?"
It then contains an image of Obama's face and says: "Eyes yo new Prezident."
Cox says he hasn't seen the e-mail and knew nothing about its distribution. But Cox says Shelton has his apologies for the content.
