Gno Streetwear: For Those In The Know
The year 2009 marks the return of urban streetwear labels with attitude. Started by Keebz, Gno Streetwear has gained enough attention from the internet fashion lurkers, as this supports the brand’s decision of selling their products exclusively online, at least for now. But first of all, let’s get to know Gno.
The main character of the brand is a gnome, hence the name ‘Gno’. According to their website:
Gnomes are characterized as a subterranean creatures who inhabit the earth’s underground and protect its hidden treasures. The name “Gnome” is thought to have come from the Greek word “Gnosis” meaning “knowledge”. Therefore Gno is a shortened version of Gnome/Gnosis.
Gno aims to stand out in a market saturated with substance-lacking designs. Incorporating a message and relevant theme into every piece of artwork, Gno strives to stay consistent and deliver a truly artistic product from beginning to end.
It’s only natural for Keebz to start a high-quality graphic artwork for Gno’s shirts. Keebz majored in animation in college and have always loved art. This leads to Gno’s designs’ one-man-show culture,as Keebz designs every single artwork by himself. His inspiration for Gno mostly came from social issues in the US and around the world. Music also plays a big part in Gno’s designs as Keebz often gets an inspiration ignition from the music of Kweli, Common, LL, Immortal Technique, J-Live, etc. This is also the reason why Keebz thinks that Gno goes really well with Hip Hop for the most part.
Keebz also feels strongly that Gno brings substance to streetwear which is rather rarely found in today’s market. In an interview with HustleHardMagazine.com, he stated:
“I feel Gno brings substance to streetwear which is not often found in today’s market. Not to say that every design needs to include substance, because then everything would be over saturated. I’m just trying to bring a balance.”
Up to now, Gno has very slim collection for wome and Keebz is not being secretive about the reeason behind it. Lack of funding does not stop Gno from roaming the internet, as much as it doesn’t stop Keebz from delivering excellent designs. Afterall, Gno might be new, but Keebz is a veteran in design. He’s worked with A-listers such as Jin, Roscoe Umali, Far East Movement and comedian Chris Kanik.
