Another hot up and coming brand that SoJones was able to chat with at the Cargo trade show in New York City this week is Good Wood NYC. We were able to spend a few minutes with the founder Kerri O’Connell to see what makes Good Wood tick.
Jake: How did you come up with the idea to make wooden jewelry?
Kerri: I just felt like there is so much stuff out there made of metal. I wanted to try something different than gold and silver.
Jake: Does the “green” trend that has been popular, lately have anything to do with it?
Kerri: Not really. I have actually been making this stuff since before everyone got on that bandwagon. But the fact that everyone wants to be green and buy natural products has definitely helped us along.
Jake: I always thought that “good wood” was something that baseball players said to each other after hitting a home run. How did it come to be the name of your brand?
Kerri: I like the way it sounds, I guess that it is kind of an inuendo, too.
Jake: So, how is this stuff made. Do you use machines and stuff?
Kerri: Well, everything is hand made, even the ones that we keep in stock. The designs are burned into them with a laser tool. The ones that are painted, are also painted by hand.

Jake: Where do the ideas come from? Do you have designers that work for you?
Kerri: I come up with all of the designs by myself.
Jake: About how long does it take you to make one of these pieces?
Kerri: Depending on how detailed it is, it takes anywhere from 1 to 3 hours.
Jake: Are you guys trying to keep it local, or are you looking to expand?
Kerri: We actually already have spread out quite a bit. We have our products in retail stores on both coasts and in Asia. We are also on Karmaloop.
Jake: What can we expect to see from Good Wood in the future?
Kerri: Well, we are coming out with wooden frames for glasses, soon. We also have some more elaborate and detailed pieces in the works.
