Royaltees Clothing Line x SoJones

[SoJones] Introduce yourself and describe how your brand was started?
[Royaltees] I’m Justin Elliott most people in Miami know me as Just Blaze from the events I host around town. I was born in Philly and moved to Miami a few years back. My family is Jamaican and that is where I get most of my influences from. Royaltees was started on the bases of not just being a Clothing Line but a way of life. Royaltee as defined us is someone trying to be the best at what they love. When you’re the best at what you do people will often refer to you as the KING. If you are not going to try to be the best at whatever it is you do, why even try. Royaltees is about the person that is pursuing their passion with their whole heart into it. Our logo is a Lion because the Lion is king of the jungle and if life is like a concrete jungle so the Royaltees Lion represents being on top of your game.
[SoJones] Describe this season and next season’s looks. Include any sources of inspiration (examples: 80’s graffiti, muses like Agyness Deyn, 70’s disco bands, music videos etc)
[Royaltees] Well this past season look was kind of a summer in Miami feel. Miami is a melting pot of culture so we did a lot of shirt based of the West Indies. Our number one sellers are the “Im Famous In …” shirts and we had a lot of request from all over for those. This upcoming 2009 fall season will be our first official “season” and we are really excited. We are going off of the 10 main colors the fall season, so all of our pieces will revolve around these colors. We coming out with around 50 pieces in total 25 Men’s and 25 Women’s so it will be interesting.

[SoJones] What celeb or well-known figure(s) exemplify the brand?
[Royaltees] When I think about Celeb’s that exemplify the Royaltees brand I think people like Movado, Serani, Trey Song, Keri Hilson, Dwayne Wade, people that have not been around for a long time but have made a impact on fields of endeavor.
[SoJones] Any product placements on celebs, in movies or videos to keep an eye out for?
[Royaltees] Most defiantly I am in Miami so I meet artist all the time and I get a lot of love from people. One of the artist I sponsor named Trigger won the 106 and Park song writing contest and he is going back to the show and he will be reppin Royaltees on the show and have giveaways also. And we are working on a photo shoot with some of the cast from College Hill South Beach soon and a number of other Miami Celeb’s.
[SoJones] Any expansion plans?
[Royaltees] Of course we are now getting ready for the Fashion Design Expo its one of the biggest fashion events in Miami. So that will give us a lot of exposure and allow us to get in touch with a lot of buyers. We are working on a new Campaign “ Are You Royaltee?” to build brand awareness and get people use to seeing the name because Roayltees is not going anywhere lol.
[SoJones] Looking ahead over the next year or two, what themes/looks/styles do you see your brand gravitating to?
[Royaltees] Well people love our saying tees so we will mostly defiantly keep that up. But we are trying to brand ourselves so you will be seeing lot of designs with the Royaltees Lion. But we are trying to get away from doing a lot of shirts and add more diversity to the line like polos, cardigans and button-ups. One of our recent ad’s was ‘Royaltees We The Young Black Ralph Lauren’, and that’s a good direction to go in.

[SoJones] What themes/looks/styles do you see your brand moving away from?
[Royaltees] One style I don’t ever want to see with a Royaltees tag in it is that Ed Hardy type look. Some of those designs are nice, but a lot of armatures threw a bunch of vectors they found online together and call it a shirt. They have to theme its just a bunch of ink on a shirt. Our designs are not complicated but what the represent is what is important. Every shirt we do has a theme behind it and a purpose for being designed not just because it looks cool. I that style is on its way out anyways. We rather focus on colors and branding instead of throwing a bunch of somebody’s work on a shirt and calling it mine.
[SoJones] What has been a surprise fashion hit over the last year? (a particular piece, a look or even another brand)
[Royaltees] Our biggest fashion hit as I had mentioned earlier have been our “Im Famous In ….” shirts . That started from this thing I use to say when I was going out. I would leave my ID at home sometimes and still get into every party I wanted. I would say “Im Famous In Miami Id Don’t Need Id” lol, people loved it so I cut it short to Im Famous In Miami and that has been my biggest seller. I get request for all over I have done Im famous in DC, Jamaica, St Luica, Trinidad, Ny Philly Vegas and Japan just to mention a few. That’s one tee that is going to stay part of the line of all year around.

That is awesome. I hear ya on the Ed Hardy thing. That seems to be all it is anymore. If I wanted a shirt with junk on it I would just dirty a tee LOL
