Beyonce to Debut Signature Fragrance by Coty

The year 2009 marks a milestone in celebrity fragrance history as pop diva Beyoncé has finally joined the sweet-smelling celebrity fragrance lineup. Beyoncé partnered up with Coty Inc. to launch her own signature perfume in Spring 2010 for US consumers and the rest of the world in Fall 2010. Beyoncé shared her thoughts about the perfume.
“For me, fragrance reflects a woman’s attitude and unique sense of style. While I love various perfumes, I haven’t found a scent that truly personifies me as a woman. Working with Coty, I was able to turn my ideal fragrance into a reality by creating an alluring and sophisticated fragrance; one that’s reflective of my inner power.”
Her husband, Jay-Z, recently inked a deal with Parlux Fragrances Inc., and was reported to have linked up with singer Rihanna and rapper, Kanye West to produce their fragrances. Jay-Z was said to have linked up with another unnamed female star in a fragrance deal, causing all speculations leaned towards Beyoncé.
Although Coty declined to give further details of the upcoming fragrance, president of Coty Beauty, Renato Semerari, thinks that Beyoncé is a role model for women of all ages and commented:
“She has a powerful ability to capture the attention of the world.”
The company is known for pioneering the celebrity fragrance trend with 2002’s Glow by J. Lo and have since been the house of many famous faces who aspire to have their own signature scent including Halle Berry, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Sarah Jessica Parker, Gwen Stefani, Celine Dion, Kylie Minogue, Kimora Lee Simmons, Kate Moss, Shania Twain, Victoria Beckham and David Beckham.
But… adding drama and suspense to the whole anticipation is a recently filed lawsuit from apparel retailer, Abercrombie & Fitch Co. The company claims her upcoming fragrance release infringes on its existing trademark. In a federal lawsuit filed Tuesday, 15 September 2009, Abercrombie claims that a fragrance named ”Sasha Fierce”, otherwise known as Beyonce’s alter ago, ”poses a likelihood of confusion” with Abrecrombie’s own “Fierce” brand. It said such confusion could deprive it of control over a trademark it has used since 2002, and perhaps cost it sales.
A&F’s version of “Fierce” is a unisex cologne with a fresh citrus aroma and warm musky subtleness.
Beyoncé’s plunge into the celebrity fragrance realm leaves Madonna as one of the few superstars who has yet to have her own signature scent. So what do you think, will Sasha Fierce actually be fiercer than A&F?
