Sojones.com has talked with a lot of clothing line owners, and most of them are men who own men’s urban streetwear lines.  That’s not the case with Elusion, a male clothing line owned by Danita Davis, a woman who’s also the creative designer of the brand.  Danita gives the 411 on Elusion.

Introduce yourself and describe how your brand was started?

My name is Danita Davis. I’m the 2nd African-American female to own a men’s brand of clothing, Elusion Clothing. I am also the creative designer. Elusion was created when I was in college in 2001. I wanted to do something other than what I was going to school for. I always had a love for art and I always drew clothing. It eventually led to me owning my own brand.

Describe this season and next season’s looks. Include any sources of inspiration.

To me, this season’s looks are plain and simple. I think the Ed Hardy movement kinda calmes everyone down. Not much on the jeans anymore. There’s still decoration on hoodies and tees, but the simple classy look is very big right now. That’s the lane Elusion Clothing is headed down this season. Winter will take on the same look in my opinion. The vests will still be a big thing. It’s obvious the plain look is in. Levis is back and their prices shot through the roof. Kanye West sets a lot of the trend in fashion for men.

What celeb or well-known figure(s) exemplify the brand?

Our style is best represented by Kanye West. Very comfortable look. It’s a “do what I want to” type of style, where you may not like wear it yourself, but you won’t knock the man at the same time. That’s how Elusion Clothing is in my opinion.

Any product placements on celebs, in movies or videos to keep an eye out for?

We just sent an abundance of clothing to Terrence J(106th & Park)in hopes that he’ll rock something on the show, We also just sent a bunch of clothing down to Don Cannon and Dj Infamous, Wiz Khalifa and hoping to land this upcoming shoot with Minnesota Vikings running back, Adrian Peterson, who shares the same PR as we do. We also are in the works to hopefully sponsor pro boxer Paul “The Punisher” Williams. We currently sponsor H.I.T., rapper from Fly Society.

Any expansion plans?

Yes, we’re currently expanding this season into cut & sew. It’s definitely a risk, but as a brand, you will get nowhere without taking risks. We’re also expanding into accessories for fall & winter, so stay tuned.

Looking ahead over the next year or two, what themes/looks/styles do you see your brand gravitating to?

It’s hard to tell because fashion is always changing. We like to play seasons by ear. Too much of an over assumption can cause you to lose too much money in my opinion. I like the fitted look and hope that it stays forever. We want to be that next long lasting brand. Similar to Ralph Lauren.

What themes/looks/styles do you see your brand moving away from?

We try not to be too much in one lane. We don’t want to stay one certain way for too long, the (fashion)game changes too much. Have a little of everything, for every type of person. We will move away from the bright colors this fall because its been 2 years now. Nothing against the colors, but again, we don’t want to stay one way too long. Fashion is always changing.

What has been a surprise fashion hit over the last year?

Surprise? The legging jeans for men. Skinny jeans. That came out of nowhere. I myself have nothing against the look, but a lot of people do. Fitted and Skinny are two different sizes to me. Kanye never wore skinny’s. The skinnys are a Mick Jagger all the way. Literally came out of nowhere to me.
