The SoJones Survey: Who’s the BEST Hip-Hop Artist of the Past 10 Years?
There’s always a time when we feel the need to push your buttons a little bit, SoJones readers. Today, we’re wondering if you would speak up and share your thoughts with other readers about who you think is the BEST hip-hop artist of the past 10 years. If you haven’t got a clue or you don’t know where to start, the two hip-hop artists below might tickle your fancy.
Kanye West
Although these days he’s more into cuddling up with his new girlfriend, Kim Kardashian, Kanye West happens to be one of the most talked about rappers in the industry. His success in selling albums, however, is not on the same level as his attitude as West is probably the only rapper ever to be called a “jackass” by President Obama. And, of course, who could forget the MTV VMA incident with country’s rising star, Taylor Swift, a few years back? Apparently, all of that gets put aside due to his genius at turning samples into his own. His collaboration with Jay-Z on Watch The Throne has been well received, and people seem to forget about his “attitude ‘problem.” His interest in fashion has also influenced a bunch of new hip-hop artists, as well.
Jay-Z
Although he is certainly still a rapper, most people can’t think of Jay-Z without immediately identifying him as a mogul in his own right, and this pretty much affects people’s judgment about his music these days. However, Jay-Z is still on top of most people’s list when it comes to choosing the best artist in hip-hop. Although this has been proven by the number of albums he has sold since starting his hip-hop career, some hip-hop fans see him as a “popular” artist who is all about being commercial. What say you? Do you think Jay-Z is still strongly attached to his hip-hop roots, or has he gone mainstream?
