Lil’ Wayne: The Carter Documentary
Production company QD3 released a critically acclaimed documentary that attempts to get beyond the persona that Lil’ Wayne is so careful to portray at all times. In doing so the director perhaps exposed a nerve, as Weezy withdrew his support for the film after seeing the first cut. The film premiered at the annual Sundance film festival earlier this year on January 19th.

My thoughts:
I give The Carter documentary 3/5 stars. It’s more or less how you would imagine Lil’ Wayne’s life to be like, if you know a little about the man. This is a 90 minute in-depth look into the lifestyle and career of Lil Wayne, so a big part of it covers his drug use. We are taken to his hotel room where his microphone, prescription cough syrup, and a giant wad of cash are ready to go in a Louis Vuitton suitcase. It’s understandable why Lil Wayne (unsuccessfully) sued to block release of this film.

Wayne’s manager Cortez Bryant is seen recalling childhood memories of drug dealing, journalists all asking the same scope of questions, people sneaking in backstage, and Wayne’s travels around Amsterdam, L.A, and his hometown, New Orleans.
Remember when Wayne’s “The Carter 3″ went platinum and then some? Guess what Wayne was doing when he heard the news? He was in the bus, taking a short break from recording! No Ray J “party all the time” behavior here, folks!
Wayne’s daughter Reginae Carter is present here as well, rapping like her daddy, and sharing her favorite gift she ever received from Wayne which turns out is simply his presence.
When all is said and done, Wayne is now at a milestone in his career with over 1,000 unreleased songs. Did he surpass Tupac on his volume of work? Speak your piece in the comments.

The man is a rock star and a truly dedicated one. Until the end, Wayne will emerge from a cloud of smoke when he takes the stage, and when he records in his hotel room, tour bus, The Hit Factory, etc it’s the only thing that keeps him sane and successful, to the point where a Rolls Royce from mentor Brian “Baby” Williams for his birthday is like getting a Starbucks card for the rest of us.
A true follower of Lil’ Wayne will love this DVD. A music critic will only need to see it once. However everyone can learn something from how dedicated Lil’ Wayne is: anything can be achieved when you work harder at your craft than your competitors; hence why Wayne justifiably calls himself the “best rapper alive”.
