While there’s a lot of clothing lines delivering profound messages about what’s going on in the world, there are only a few delivering their messages in true style.  If what you’re looking for is to get your words across and looking fly while doing so and feeling good about it, then Unscripted Clothing provides what you need.  SoJones.com talks to Roy Masuko of Unscripted Clothing, who dishes everything about his line and what it represents.

Introduce yourself and describe how your brand was started?

My name is Roy Masuko, and I am the founder and creative director of Unscripted Clothing Company. Currently I have two partners, co-founder Jay Song and business director William Rodriguez as well as our President, Brett Giglio. Unscripted is a socially conscious street wear brand that delivers clean design and style while spreading knowledge of causes that really matter. The driving force behind Unscripted is our desire to communicate real issues that affect a largely unaware public.

Having grown up in both Japan and the US, I was fortunate to have a different perspective on many tangible world issues from an early age. From it’s infancy, I set out to build a company that people could identify with. A company that bridges the gap from the action sports and underground sub-culture that I grew up admiring with current world issues that are escaped from majority of our youth today. Most people care, but I wanted to offer the public a chance to wear the care.

With Unscripted, it’s never been about the politics, but focusing on the actual issues at hand. How do we communicate the issues of child soldiers in Africa or sex trafficking minors in Thailand that in all honesty are often escaped from the majority of the 18 year old high school student group in American suburbia? I think we found a perfect medium for our concept in the progressively forward, street wear industry.

Describe this season’s theme for your line. Include any sources of inspiration
Our current line has an underline theme bringing focus to education in the inner cities. You can see this inspiration in our cut and sew pieces with original pen holders, our collegiate sweater and cardigans, as well as several designs like ‘Be Your Own Genius.’ The epidemic of poor city schools with poor resources, which has plagued the U.S. educational system was particularly important to us as a street wear brand b/c these are the people that are a central focus of our brand. By integrating a collegiate look to some of our pieces we
hope to inspire the value of higher education.

We really do believe in the saying, ‘you are what you wear’ and we feel that by providing meaningful messages through fresh, clean designs we are able to provide the street wear community with an outlet to express themselves while staying hip and clean. I think we have done our job if someone wearing our shirt gets asked what their shirt means and therefore a dialogue is started about a subject that might have otherwise never have come up.

Each season Unscripted takes on new themes, which are inspired from new issues we feel are important. We feel this gives our brand a different feel every line, while staying in touch with our style and
purpose of raising awareness.

Any product placements on celebs to keep an eye out for?
We’ve accrued some really supportive brand ambassadors in ‘09 who believe in what we’re about. We’re also excited with the many up and coming musicians and athletes that have been representing the brand. It’s exciting to be involved with them at such an early stage and we hope that as our company grows, we can witness their growth into stardom.

What has been a surprise fashion hit over the last year?
I would have to say the evolution of the street wear industry as a whole. Street wear is no longer pigeon-holed into one look, rather a broad range of looks. People are wearing not only what looks good, but what they identify with and what they believe in.

To see where the industry was just two years ago and it’s amazing growth is simply sick. So I would say it wasn’t as much of a (shocking) surprise, as a pleasant one.

What current fashion trend would you like to see thrown overboard?
To be honest, I’m not into chaotic paint splatters, skulls, and rhinestones on my tees. If I woke up tomorrow and they had disappeared completely, I wouldn’t lose any sleep over it.

What is/was one of your most prized fashion pieces, past or present?
My watch. Whatever I’m wearing, that’s always the constant. It’s a priceless piece to me and I make it work with whatever I’m wearing.

TuPac or Biggie?
Pac.

You can cop Unscripted Clothing for a price range of $30 up to $65 at their official website at http://uncscriptedclothing.com.  Here are some of their SoJones-approved pieces, from their winter ‘09 collection… and the behind-the-scenes video of the photo shoot.  Enjoy!
