Extreme Fashions From The Runway

Fashion can be subtle yet defined.   Soft yet strong.  Exciting but useful.

Or Extreme.

Extreme fashion trends catch our attention, puts a “zing” in the mundane and confirms boundaries can be broken in the creative world.

Ultra dimensional silhouettes, extreme shoe heel heights, over sized picture frame hats, bright multi-colored hairstyles are just a few of the examples of extreme fashions from the runways.

Runway fashions run the gamut of ultra fantasy to utilitarian chic and diversified streetwear.  Fantasy designs such as those by John Galliano for Dior exemplify the words “original and extreme creativity”.  While extreme, beautiful and entertaining, these types of collections are usually one-of-a-kind designs that will be archived and documented for historians and future designers.

And yes– there are customers for these extreme looks!  Jean Paul Gaultier, Alexander McQueen, Issey Miyake and others are known for their extravagant styling.  These runway looks are ordered each year from loyal clients and V.I.P. customers seated in the front row. Later, the designs will be used as inspiration or “re-translated” for additional collections intended for a broader market.

While it is easy to criticize extreme fashions, I prefer to see the “fashion glass half full” and view these originals as only limited by a designer’s imagination. Admit it, whether you liked the style or not the designer got your attention!

Case in point, extreme shoe heels and platforms are one of fashion’s hottest trends right now.  But the same shoe designer will produce the same or similar style shoe only with a lower heel for the average consumer.

How about extreme hairstyles and makeup on the runways? Some are fantastic!!! But sometimes these looks are the “accessory” to the outfit or theme on the runway–and not to be taken seriously for everyday looks in the office.

These unusually creative looks add a bit of excitement, humor and keep the element of surprise alive in the apparel industry.  So much so this “surprise” is expected at every season’s fashion show.

Extreme fashions allow us to tap into the creative minds of the designers and design teams while simultaneously promoting visibility and profitability at the mass market level. Some styles will make you laugh, make you wonder or wish you could afford the outfit. Whatever the case, don’t take extreme fashions too seriously. It’s fleeting, conversational and just might put a smile on your face!

The runway it simply a great place for an artist to show off his or her ideas. I like to see it all as well placed wows.
