New Era Cap Co., riding the baseball cap’s rise in popularity, opened its first retail store Saturday, May 20th.

The company’s caps, worn by every major league baseball player, most professional athletes in general, and an A-list of Hip-Hop artists, opened their flagship store in the SoHo district New York City. The specific site of the location is off Broadway, at Fourth Street, in SoHo.

Success of the company’s multi-colored “59-Fifty” hats exploded since their introduction to the general public an estimated two years ago.

Fans of fashion and professional sports were arriving to the store from cabs, the NRW subway transit’s Prince Street stop, and personal vehicles alike.

A rare fact that can be learned from New Era Cap Company’s Crystal Howard is that the company might not have even made the non-official cap colors if it were not for the critically acclaimed film director, Spike Lee. According to Howard, Spike called the company in the 90’s requesting the caps in multiple colors to match what he wore. Being one of their high profile clients, the company investigated if they could do this, and upon league approval, went forward with providing Spike with an array of colors. After debuting the non-official team colored fitted caps, the demand became so great, the company moved forward with the concept immediately.
