Alphanumeric “Environmental Protection Company” commonly known as A#, burst into the fashion scene in 1998 with its stylish yet functional clothes, which were perfect for people with active lifestyles. San Diego, CA-based Alphanumeric apparel eventually became the predecessor of functional modern streetwear. Alphanumeric specializes in buttondown shirts, denims, jackets, pants, shorts, sweatshirts, t-shirts, and windbreakers.

The label’s name aimed to fuse the spirit of letters and numbers in order to communicate a message throughout the world. True enough, it has sent an impact throughout the fashion world, bringing together and unifying extreme athletes, DJs, musicians, and artists in their pursuit of functional fashion. Notable fans include Sam Masakela (of the E! Daily 10 fame) and even characters from Battlestar Galactica!

Alphanumeric has successfully fused a wide array of athletic lifestyles, including snowboarding, surfing, skateboarding, music, and car culture. True to its defiant roots, Alphanumeric took a non-traditional approach to design and marketing by employing an educational-based ad campaign.

Ten years after the launch of Alphanumeric, Alyasha Owerka-Moore (Alphanumeric and Fiberops founder and creative director), in coordination with Mirko Mangum (partner and founder of Univ), re-launched the label and enlisted the help of Mark Cruz, Art Director. Together, these three head honchos have managed to revitalize the label even after a decade off the market. With the creative juices of Moore, Mangum, and Cruz combined, they have made Alphanumeric a sought-after brand by fashionistas who desire functionality and quality.

Alphanumeric’s strong fashion sense is drawn from the ideals of these men. As Moore defines it, ” fashion is a necessity that’s fine tuned or given an aesthetic value to please different people and then it becomes an expression”.  Treating fashion like art ‘which warrants a second look before it can appreciated’ has given Moore a step ahead over what he does best. After all, he has been partially responsible for the design successes of Phat farm, Enyce, among many others.

Unlike other designers who treat their designs as more of a means of living, Moore sees fashion as his passion. “(Fashion is) really fun. It’s something I definitely love to do”. True enough, his love for style is greatly mirrored in his fashionable pieces.
