Blvck Scvle – pronounced as Black Scale – is a clothing company slash art collective founded by Michael Yabut (aka MEGA) and Alfred De Tagle in 1997. The Los Angeles-based streetwear brand became the sounding board of the designer duo, who besides sharing an inherent passion for fashion design, wanted to bring up the unnoticed issues like government, identity, death and religion.

With these as inspirations for the clothing line, Black Scale has transcended the boundaries and has become more a lifestyle than a mere brand. Besides the dark references that make Blvck Scvle the label that it is, MEGA admits to gaining inspiration from “many designers from high end to contemporary to street”.
MEGA explains in his interview with Hypebeast.com: “The whole aesthetic behind Black Scale has deep meaning that is expressed through simple and classic designs based on our life experiences. We always dreamed about having a clothing line. We never really planned on it till one day my partner Alfred and I thought it was the right time to push out a couple tees. The response we got from our first season was so strong and inspirational that we knew we had a great responsibility on our shoulders to share our experiences with the people.”
He adds, “All of the designs stem from the original inspirations of the brand. We decide on how each particular design relates to our ideals & how that design is meant to represent our way of thinking. We’re always pushing each other to create new ways to express our collected knowledge to the public”.
Besides the strong influences and dark inspirations her brings into his designs, MEGA also makes sure that he retains the same level of quality in his shirt designs. He explains, “I feel the materials you use for garments are very important. The quality control and how pieces are constructed are things we are learning nofivew before we release more pieces in the future. We have been searching for quality materials that we feel will go with our future collections. Keeping the classic look with the quality still attached to it.”
MEGA and De Tagle’s strong design aesthetics are obviously reflected in the past five collections Blvck Scvle has launched. MEGA adds, “We design with the philosophy that every detail has meaning within the design. Every image, every word & every shape used has meaning.”
Like the five previous seasons, Blvck Scvle’s Season VI collection features shirts, crewneck sweaters and hoodies characteristic of monotone designs and base hues of white, black, and red. The shirts, although bearing Blvck Scvle’s distinctive designs, came in vibrant colorways.

Blvck Scvle teamed up with Diamond Supply Co. for this limited edition "Black Diamond" tee.
Believing in harmony and interconnection, Blvck Scvle has collaborated with a number of labels to come up with stylish design fusions. A collaboration with Diamond Supply Co. gave birth to the “Black Diamond,” a pinstriped shirt which bears the texts “Diamond” and “44.”
Blvck Scvle also collaborated with Major D.C. to come up with the aptly-named “Black Super”, a cap which bears the 0.5 star and crescent design and exudes a D.C. influence. Another Blvck Scvle-DC collaboration is the “Blvck Scvle” Fitted tee, which bears the aforementioned text and NY DC SEOUL MANILA LA SF.
In celebration of the 2009 NBA finals, Blvck Scvle collaborated with High Point to commemorate the event. The shirt, available in four colors, includes the Blvck Scvle’s trademark in black, red, and white.
Blvck Scvle also teamed up with 7 Union and Rogue Status for the Black Fitted Cap, which bears the text “Don’t Trust Anyone”. The label also did a repeat-collabo with Rogue Status to come up with two distinctive shirts, the first named “Gumball 3000″ in recognition of the 10th year anniversary rally.
