In November 2000, Swedes Orjan Anderson, Adam Friberg, and two of their close friends decided to open a quaint Second Hand store in suburban Stockholm. They named the store “Weekend” because of the fact that it was only open during Saturday and Sunday. Despite its hidden location, and its wide array of quality clothing, sales of the shop skyrocketed. As a result, the people behind Weekend decided to team up with Lasse Karlsson to open up a bigger shop in Central Stockholm. The new store was christened with the name “Weekday” since it was open everyday of the week.

The store’s high-fashion and exclusive denim brands truly attracted Swedish hipsters. Because some of the denim brands were expensive, Orjan felt the need to offer the public  line of cheaper yet fashionable jeans. With this in mind, the “Tight” jean, an unwashed, very tight-fitted stretch denim with a reasonable price ($65) was born. The style was very fashion-forward, because it channeled the rocker leg, complete with tapered legs. This was during a time when all denim makers favored the bootcut fashion. The “Tight” jean became an exclusive in-store item, with the skull logo designed by the founder’s friends Karl Grandin and Bjorn Altdax.

In January 2005, Cheap Monday became a brand with a full-scale collection. The line was distributed in Sweden and other areas in the globe. April that year, more stocks were shipped outside Sweden. Today, the label carries eyewear, boxers, tees, scarves, cardigans, jackets, dresses, skirts, tanks, hoodies, body suits, shorts, and of course – its signature pants. Only a few of them go beyond the $100-mark.

As was Orjan’s vision of providing cheap yet quality jeans, Cheap Monday continues to strive to provide fashionable wears at reasonable prices. Cheap Monday aims to market and stand alongside expensive denim brands. After all, Cheap Monday has the style, quality and attitude that is at the same caliber – if not better – than other expensive denim lines.

Cheap Monday’s not-so-cheap fans include celebrities and personalities such as actresses Jessica Alba and Jennifer Connelly.

From starting as a quaint store in suburban Stockholm, Cheap Monday has now expanded as an international line present in 40 countries – Japan, Australia, Europe, USA, Canada, and The Middle East, to name a few – and about 2000 stores around the globe. In 2008, Cheap Monday joined forces with H&M to further strengthen the marketing prowess of the brand.

Now on its fourth year as a full-blown clothing line, Cheap Monday continues to draw attention from stylish people. So buy your own pair of Cheap Monday denims now before it’s too late!
