Sibling Revelry. Echo, with designer siblings Steve and Devon - all in Dim Mak.
In 2006, superstar DJ Steve Aoki, also known by his stage name Kid Millionaire, and his half-sister, actress, model and Levi’s Asia guest designer, Devon Aoki, launched the Dim Mak Collection (named after his idol Bruce Lee). The siblings teamed up with George Garrow and Dan Single, owners and founders of Ksubi, to jointly release the colection. According to Steve, “We’ve been putting it together for two years, from the very early stages.”
Steve says of his very own collection: “The Dim Mak collection is mainly a tee line with a few sweaters. We do really well online and have about 50 stores that carry our product from Collette to Fred Segal to Beams to other boutiques. As far as collaborations go, we’ve done some consistent ones that are doing well.”
As for the design process, Steve says: “She (Devon) is going to design all the women’s line – I’m gonna design all the men’s line with the Ksubi guys.” Helping out with the superstar DJ’s clothing campaign is Michael Dutcher, who supervises the LA-based Dim Mak offices and handles the promotion, marketing, radio and planning.
It comes as no surprise that Steve decided to launch his own line. After all, he was involved with the development of certain lines, such as clothes for KR3W apparel, footwear for Supra, headphones for WESC, headwear with NEFF, and bags with Burton. As with the collection’s name, it was adapted from the enterprise that Steve Aoki holds – starting with the Dim Mak records, which has catapulted the careers of unique band Bloc Party and has remixed the songs of Snoop Dogg, and Peaches, among many others.
The Dim Mak collection is stratified into different lines, including the Winter 06, Summer 07, Summer 08, and Winter 08 collection, and the following special lines, which are:
