Mike Malbon, one of the founders of Frank151
Frank151 was founded in 2005 by Mike and Stephen Malbon and is an urban brand based in New York. This label is focused on what they call the “verge culture” and caters to everything street. They not only spot out the trends, but they actually help make the trends. They do this with the help of their quarterly mini magazine which is distributed mainly in the Frank Chop Shops but also all around the world via sneaker enthusiastic spots.
Their style consists of beautifully designed caps, some having designs under the brim and dope t-shirts that have designs that are straight to the point and simple, with a bit of humor injected into each one. They also have belts, action figures and other novelty items for sale in their shop.
They have been featured in Hypebeast for their Samoan New Era 59FIFTY fitted caps, Royal magazine’s hollywood issue as breakout brand, Milk magazine all the way in HongKong, Print Critic, Creativity Magazine, a publication that covers the hottest trends in advertising and design, and in Endorsed magazine, a clothing publication based in the Netherlands.

These clever entrepreneurs found the best way to market their label on the cheap by giving free rein to a guest collaborator for the month. They have built their credibility through original and never before seen merchandise and by sponsoring events. They sponsor surf expos all over the US, parties for their book launches at all the most well known clubs. They travel the world to visit places that show their brand some love – like Amsterdam and Japan – and they have exhibits for their art. But, most of their fame comes from the number of collaborations they have done with other artists.
They have done desktop collaborations, which you can get for download, with TheHundreds and Evil Monito. A few of their magazine and merchandise collaborations include Stussy Daikanyama, Swagger, Ghostface Killah, Maharishi, Fun Loving Criminals, Ruslin Karablin of SSUR, Camella Ehike of Triple5Soul and photographer Ricky Powell.

They regularly participate in the Magic tradeshow, and have been well received. Frank151 sponsors fundraising for Mary’s Child, a home for teenage mothers in Jamaica.
These guys have been making waves since they first started, and they have slowly and steadily gotten a foothold on the streetwear industry today. You can check out their stuff over at karmaloop.com or their website, www.frank151.com
