In the late 1990’s, Australian’s trademark line Insight Surfboards launched a surf-skate clothing line to complement the laid back lifestyle it supports. This internationally-renowned clothing label was named Insight Clothing, after its parent company.
Although the clothing line is largely inspired by the surfing and skating lifestyle, it is also motivated by various themes such as music, art, fashion, and culture. Insight Clothing’s revolutionary designs are the results of the meticulous brainstorming by designers George Gorrow and Natalie Wood. The duo behind Insight believes that the brand should not be limited to a particular niche. More than just gaining acclaim, they believe in making clothes that they themselves would wear.
As Wood said in her Insider interview, “What I thought would be a good direction for Insight was to add a lot more styling and trends—make it fun and ultimately an easy-to-wear product, but never at the cost of looking good. This really is the philosophy—every piece can be worn to the beach or down the street.”
Such goes the success of the brand as they pride themselves to creating unique yet fashionable, relaxed yet trendy clothing. After all, Insight’s motto is “to surf, skate, and create.” As of now, Insight Clothing specializes in men’s apparel, women’s apparel, swimsuits and surfboards.
In the Women’s Summer 08/09 Collection, the line comprises of three themes: Midnight Shadows, Lolita, and Sugar N Spice. The Midnight Shadows line includes such items as the Sparrow Spunk vest, and the Worth Waiting Dress . The Lolita collection, on the other hand, has Kiss Kate Dress, Mixed Bag, and the Chase The Boys Trackie. Completing the women’s fashion triumvirate is the Sugar N Spice collection, which comprises of the Fruit Punk Pack, and the Doubtful Dee Short.

The Men’s Summer 08/09 Collection, on the other hand, only has two sub-collections – Zoup and Substance. The former has the No Introduction shirt, Buzzcock washed denim short, and Unpunk tee. The latter, on the other hand, has Always Now Shirt, and the Buzzcock embroidery denim. On the other hand, the repeat team Zoup and Modern Ratwalk complete the Spring 2009 men’s collection.
The Summer 09 Swim Collection is entitled Cosmic Lights while the Spring 09 collection is tagged as Crystal Galaxy. As for the surfboards, the short boards were created by Matt Penn while the Long Boards were created by Hayden Lewis.
Truly a “surf and skate” company, Insight Clothing supports a number of extreme athletes, such as surfers Kai Otton, Luke Stedman, Warren Smith, and the Wilmot clan of Jamaica; and skaters Daniel Shimizu, Jose Rojo, Rhys Grogan, Brian Brown, and Bernie Foo.
Barely a decade in the fashion business, Insight is already popular in 28 countries around the globe. Currently the brand is available in the USA, Australia, Indonesia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, UK, canada, Spain, France, Germany, Portugal, Switzerland, Austria, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Netherlands, Iceland, Luxembourg, Belgium, Czech Republic, Italy, Greece, Israel, and Slovakia.
