Matiko Shoes, according to founder and designer Jesse Howard, was created to “fill the niche for high-fashion, funky, comfortable women’s shoes for the 18-35 year-old market.”
As an employee in a quaint surf shop in Maui, Hawaii, Howard learned all about the ropes of wholesale and retail business. Not long after, he got hooked to the addicting vice that is fashion. He was able to open two small shops retailing shirts and men’s surfwear.
After graduating from a business school in Los Angeles, Howard thought of a great opportunity to delve in. “My first thought was to design men’s skate shoes and surf flip-flops, but then it hit me: surfers and skaters buy a few pairs per year, but L.A. women collect more shoes than there are days in a year!” he said.
He did come up with a great idea, after all. Now, Matiko shoes have been selling like pancakes ever since he started the brand in 2003.
Unlike other footwear collections, Matiko Footwear has managed to tap in to a chic girl’s inner psyche by producing unusual and out of the box shoe designs. In fact, the Tang model, which was heralded as a crazy-looking rubber-soled high heel pump became the first one to be sold out.
Truly a versatile collection, Matiko now creates funky and sexy shoes – ranging from pumps, flats, boots, and comfort shoes – which emanate the label’s signature look.
Bestselling wedges include the Akayla, Ashley, Cary, Chelsea, Holly, Moira, Nola, Pabla, Paley, and Sasha models. As for the sandals department, the Cairo, Eara, Farah, Kail, Lalasa, Madrid, Madris, Micol, Nakia, Namas, Noelle, Oba, Roman, Sierra, and Zabby models continue to be fan favorites.
Celebrities seen sporting Matiko shoes include acctresses Reese Witherspoon and Rachel Bilson and reality TV star Lauren Conrad (all spotted in Gold Oda Flats), singer and designer Gwen Stefani, Oscar awardee Halle Berry (in Sara Sandals), wildchild actress Lindsay Lohan (in Brown Scallop Boots), singer Rihanna, model Kate Moss, Heroes star Hayden Panettiere and High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens (in Ashley 2 Wedges), socialite Nicky Hilton, and RnB diva Fergie.
