In 1997, artist and designer Matthew Waldman had a peculiar flashback of his first grade math class while staring at a large wall clock stationed in one of the many hotels in London. This flashback made him ponder at the lack of choices for timepieces. With this in mind, he doodled ideas for potential watch designs on a napkin and jetted it back to New York. After perfecting his sketches, he presented his designs to a legal team, and they were glad to inform him that his designs were unique enough to patent.

This became the start of Nooka Watches (established 2005), a revolutionary timepiece line famous for its brilliant designs and hues. As for the name, Nooka means a lot of things. For one, it signifies the contraction of the word “New Yorker” as pronounced with the native New York accent. Secondly, it expresses a global fusion by combining “New York” with “Osaka.” After all, New York-based Nooka has a satellite office in Japan.

Just as unique as Nooka’s name is the label’s method of creating watches. As Waldman puts it in his Speartalks interview, “I think we’re helping create a new genre. We get so many emails from people who write “I never wore a watch until I found Nooka.”

Nooka watches’ linear and graphic representations of time tackles a unique way of interpreting time. The visual appeal increases as time progresses – beautifying further the abstract and ephemeral concepts of the timepiece. Thus, a universal visual language breaks through the wearers.

In his interview with Wrist Fashion, Waldman expressed the roots of the watches’ designs. “Nooka has always been a product of futurism and sci-fi optimism,” he said.

Besides its unique designs, Nooka also takes pride in using fine diamonds, bold colors, and genuine crocodile bands in its fine watches. More than just creating timepieces for the knack of it, Nooka’s design processes are based on analytic and artistic thoughts rather than what’s hot in the fashion scene. True enough, the Nooka approach transcends any other – because it is a concept, a method, and a mindstyle. After all, Waldman believes that “The Nooka customer is buying a design [or a fashion] experience, not a timepiece.”
