Obey is not just a clothing line. Obey is a major urban phenomenon which has transformed streetwear into art canvases. The brilliant artist that is responsible for the brand’s unique designs is none other than Shepard Fairey. His iconic imagery has created trends and waves of inspiration all over the world. Skateboarding, rock, punk, hip hop, global politics and pop culture are melted together to form Obey brand which is sold in more than 20 countries worldwide.
Obey clothing started making history in 2001. Shepard Fairy joined up with fashion designers Mike Ternosky and Erin Wignall. From their collaboration, a unique and hard-to-categorize style was born. Shepard defines the essence of the label in two words: ‘intelligently irreverent’. Indeed, producing fashion-driven garments and eclectic themes may sound intelligently irreverent to the fashion world. The guardian and brand’s icon is Andre the Giant – a stencil made by Shepard in his college years, which now symbolizes the powerful art of Shepard and his marketing company and clothing brand.
Studio Number One is also involved in creating fresh wear for Obey line. The designers at the studio, which Shepard founded in 2003, are constantly coming up with bold graphics for a broader audience. From skateboarders to streetwear addicts to urban trend makers – all are enjoying innovative products delivered promptly season after season.
Under the motto “Participation turns plans intro reality”, Obey launched Awareness clothing line. All profits made from the sale of Obey Awareness products are donated to support emerging and relevant issues worldwide. The aim is simple: to educate the people and generate healthy reactions which are truly capable to turn a better page in our future. This was the case of Awareness campaign for Fall 2008 which introduced to the public 11th Hour, a documentary narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio that tells a terrifying story about the state of humanity and the world. The film is a powerful warning to change our ways of living and save the planet while there is hope.
