Keds is a company that has been around ever since they were introduced in 1916. They started out as a unique brand of rubber sole canvas shoes in 1917. It is a footwear company that was created primarily to provide sport shoes for basketball players. However over time, various other sports were added to the list. They eventually began to provide foot gear for other sports such as baseball, tennis, football, and track & field.
An interesting fact about Keds shoes is that they were not always called “Keds”. In fact, the original name chosen for them was “Peds,” which is a Latin word meaning “foot”. This name didn’t work out because it turned out that someone else had already gotten a trademark for that name. A new name for the brand was need and that is how they got the name “Keds” which they are still known by even up until today.
Pro-Keds was established in 1949 by its parent company, Keds. These shoes were called Pro-Keds because of the fact that they were first brought into being as a unique line of athletic shoes. These particular shoes were intended to be worn and used by serious sports players, and are meant to be worn by those who played basketball.
Soon the brand became synonymous with the best, biggest, and brightest basketball players as many well-known players began to wear Pro-Keds. Some of these legendary names that have worn the brand are Kareem Abdul Jabar, Nate Archibald, and Pete Maravich just to name a few. It is no wonder that regular people would also eventually want to wear these shoes themselves. As far as other fans, this particular brand attained an exalted status as the first official brand sneaker among the New York hip-hop community.
The Keds brand itself is currently owned and run by the Stride Rite Corporation and have been popularized while having been seen on and used by such celebrities as Grandma Gatewood, who happened to be a long-distance hiker and pioneer for ultra-light hiking. She set a record on the Appalachian Trail during 1955 at the age of 67 years old. She also ventured on the trek to complete the 2,168-mile journey with only her basic equipment and a pair of Keds. An amazing feat for sure that brought the company much fame and notoriety.

Aside from the earlier notoriety and distinction that they received, they have also been spotted on many TV personalities. This started during the 1960’s and has proven true over most of the subsequent generations that followed from that point. They were worn on television by Joanie Cunningham, a character from Happy Days who was played by Erin Moran. Kelly Kapowski, played by Tiffani Thiessen from Saved by the Bell, was also famous for wearing them. The list goes on and on: Full House actress, Jodie Sweetin, who played Stephanie Tanner; the character named Lucy Camden who was played by Beverley Mitchell wore them during the first few seasons of 7th Heaven; they were regularly worn by Alicia “Al” Lambert who was played by Christine Lakin on the show called Step by Step.
Today, Pro-Keds is just as popular as it was before. So if you would like to have your very own piece of sneaker history, Pro-Keds are available in shoe retailers and online stores nationwide.
