Prohibit NYC

Prohibit NYC Logo
Prohibit NYC, was founded in New York City in the fall of 2001 by designer Maki Nakaguchi. In 2007, Prohibit moved to Tokyo as a store with the name “269 Elizabeth Street” the label’s former NYC address. Prohibit NYC made its anticipated return to the streets of NYC this past March in a new location, all with its original Japanese style.
The labels designs stand true to their name, where the the name “prohibit” came from the word “prohibition”. Prohibition simply means “can’t do” and Prohibit NYC proved the only thing that it “can’t do” is be average. The label brought something fresh to streetwear as the Tokyo style inspired designs proved to be a few stitches ahead of the stylistic curve.
Prohibit is known for the fresh, funky, and raw denim that it offers. You can find some of streetwears hottest designs at the label’s store. Prohibit has a collection that is both unique and functional. The label has mixed military themes with traditional tailoring for a design that is always the season’s hottest. Seamless detailing, crisp tailoring, and distinctive style have its loyal customers hooked.

Wakka Denim
The label is a leader in the industry, and it does not take a rocket scientist to see why. Prohibit mainly dishes out to its customers neon slogan tees and street wear’s flashiest kicks. The house label balances the stores selection with plaid button downs, classic jackets, and what brings most shoppers to the store - Japanese selvage denim.
The Fall line offers a wide range of denim pieces through collaborations with some of streetwears hottest and freshest denim producers. These designers include Nine Rulaz Line, Evisu, and LRG. Streetwear brands have become limitless but Prohibit NYC is turning heads and in the process getting a lot of the industry’s well known names to jump on board for collaborations. To celebrate Savage’s 10th anniversary, Prohibit collaborated with Mos Def and DJ Muro offering up t-shirts, hoodies, and boxed denim. You never know what a new season might birth as the store hosts limited edition collaborations with Japanese brands each season.

Mos Def Rocking Prohibit T & Hoodie
Some of hip hop’s hottest names have been seen in Prohibit NYC. Such names like Ne-Yo, Bun B, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and DJ Clue. Mos Def has been seen rocking logo hoodie from the collection that was put together in celebration of the 10th anniversary of Savage. The labels merchandise has been seen in printed media including Hardest Magazine, Complex Magazine, Warp Magazine, Woofin Magazine, and Cover Magazine to name a few. Also with the labels back in NYC, I am sure we will see and hear more from Prohibit soon.
Prohibit NYC merchandise can be bought in limited places. If you want to check out the gear you have to make it to the store location, go online to www.karamloop.com, or the label’s official website: www.prohibitnyc.com/jp/.
The label is far from a rookie in the streetwear game. With hot designs and quality pieces from their own label, and edgy denim by some of Japan’s finest, Prohibit NYC will continue to make its mark on the streetwear scene.
