Someone gives streetwear a new way to accessorize. Great shirts, pants and dope shoes are now given fresh headgear to match. Cue in: Skullcandy. Skullcandy or SKDY is a label based on the boarding and surfing culture. What started out as CEO Rick Alden’s simple need to listen to tunes while he boarded eventually exploded into a successful audio hardware and lifestyle business.
Established in 2003, Skullcandy introduced new ways of listening to music. They released new kinds of audio gear like their Skull Crushers to the unsuspecting public to surprise them with headphones that can literally make you feel like you’re inside a sub woofer. Their audio gear epitomizes the best in the business, not just with their headphones, but with their innovative core audio gear being integrated with bags, hoodies and even watches.
Their roster of athletes include champs in the skate, snow, surf, wake, bike, moto and ski industries. Showing that they haven’t forgotten their roots, most of the brand promotion is done during tournaments, events and parties of these extreme sports. They don’t believe in conventional mass promotion, they let their athletes do the marketing for them by word of mouth. Their street cred is amazing, especially for such a young company. They usually give away tickets and passes to big events that they sponsor, like the Vans Warped Tour–one of their heavily sponsored regular events. Last year, they formed a partnership with Metallica, creating Metallica laden headphones, and giving Skullcandy customers an option to download their ninth album for free together with the gear.

They have done collaborations with the likes of tokidoki, Metallica and Snoop Dogg to produce fresh audio gear that can turn heads and get compliments. They have also worked with labels like Smith Helmets, Giro, and True Anthem to create audi0 gear integrated into helmets, ski goggles and hoodies. Their products don’t stop there though, they’ve got plans to start making SKDY clothes too. They already have a few shirts available at skullcandy.com. You might as well grab some of their sweat bands, sticker packs and necklaces while you’re at it. Basically, their brand is all about integrating your passion for music into your lifestyle.
But it has to be mentioned that Skullcandy is not just all business. They give back to the community that has helped launched their line to these heights. Skullcandy is an active sponsor of the Warped Tour, promoting artists and athletes that embody the lifestyle with a passion. Skullcandy is also a loyal patron of Boarding for Breast Cancer (B4BC). B4BC is a non profit foundation that seeks to increase awareness through educating the youth, which is why the brand sees it as a responsibility to promote their cause.
