Ruslan Karablin

SSUR is the brainchild of Ruslan Karablin. He was born in the Ukraine province Odessa, and grew up in Coney Island in Brooklyn. Having strong Russian influences, he has been making art since he learned how to hold a crayon. Being influenced by Keith Haring and Stussy, he started designing tee shirts in 1989 to promote his artwork.

He named his clothing line SSUR, which is “Russ” spelled backwards. The art on his t-shirts have been making headlines in almost  instantaneously. It is apparent that in his clothing he is inspired by the three points of the Soviet triangle: politics, protest and sex. Most of the paintings he released have fast become collector’s items.

Some of his works include a line featuring the famous Che Guevarra. Showing him as the guerilla or gorilla of revolution. Under his belt are his two loves: clothing lines SSUR and Rebel Ape – both of which have achieved world-wide acclaim. Oh, and don’t forget about the newest addition to his family: GouMada. A streetwear line made just for girls.

In addition to Ruslan’s involvement in his three clothing lines, he is also part of Coney Island’s Dreamland Artist’s Club. For which he designed a piece on the West 12th on top of the Puzzles Bar. He and his shop are well known throughout the NY area, and the rest of the US for that matter.

His shirts may have garnered fans from all over the world. But you should see how much waves he’s making with his shoe designs. Ruslan has collaborated a few times with DC Shoes to come up with tight designs featuring camo-laden, water proof shoes with a mushroom cloud surprise in the insole. He’s also done a few collabs with New Era and Kangol. Each collection always contains some hot designs that have been sold out items. That’s how much hype and buzz he’s been getting for his amazing talent.
