Fashion is all about expressing yourself. One of the goals of dressing sharp is to stand out from all the other shelf-bought shirts the rest of the flock is wearing. This is the main guiding force behind Umsteigen. Berlin born Susanne Schubert founded her clothing line in Montreal in 2002, after moving from New York city.  ”Normal” is not in this 29 year old do-it-yourself genius’ vocabulary. Born to eccentric parents, she has had quite the childhood. Whether she be a pirate or a princess for a day, her supportive upbringing has certainly influenced her creative talent. With a minor in business in one hand, and an itch to sew and print in the other, she started to make clothes for herself and discovered her calling. She was made to create cute, quirky, revamped apparel classics straight from her imagination and quite literally, to you, and for you only.

Her designs are bright, funky, and definitely something to grab your hands on to. All her products are limited edition; she believes in individuality. What’s the point of trying to express yourself with something a hundred other people are wearing too? It’s classical New York streetwear with a twist. Her merchandise is literally wearable art. All of her designs have been made by her hand with resources found locally. Her small-scale design and distribute business is something of a wonder. Her production headquarters may not rival a typical cut and sew warehouse, but oh has she reached places. Her clothing line is distributed all over the US and Canada.

Her artfully designed clothes are carried by a number of online boutiques including Rare Device, BazaarAdriatic and Karmaloop. Her brand is also carried by Fly, Lola&Emily and Glam. As soon as her clothes were made available on sale, they have outsold existing brands in Fly Boutique. Talk about in demand! “I do small runs – 20 pieces of one thing and then I kind of change the pattern so it’s never really all the same… I really don’t like clothing that’s off the shelf… It’s so specific to a particular kind of genre of people. I like clothes to be expressive.” Says Ms. Schubert who also brought her clothing line to The Market NYC, New York’s mecca for fabulous threads and accessories. Her artistic success is unquestionable, but the secret to her entrepreneurial success lies in her ability to remain close to her distributors.
