The Classic Checkerboard Slip-On in Black and Off White
Few sneakers have attained international fame, and even fewer are those that gained icon status. The Vans brand has done both and more. Since its introduction in the 1970s, the Vans sneakers ubiquity across the globe is astounding. No one asks who wears a Vans shoes–instead, you’re better off asking who doesn’t.
Vans was established by Paul Van Doren with his business partners Jim Van Doren, Gordy Lee, and Serg D’Elia in 1966. In addition to sneakers for skateboarders, it expanded to sell shoes for basketball, baseball, and wrestling. However, their expansion ventures failed and Vans was forced to file for bankruptcy.
Despite this, Vans 95, also known as the Era, had become popular among the skater and surfer crowd during the 1970s. It continued to charm its way with the public when actor Sean Penn wore a black and white checkered Vans in the cult classic coming-of-age film “Fast Times at Ridgemont High.” The classic Vans slip-on faced international spotlight and from then on the most recognizable iconic sneakers was born.

In addition to the slip-on shoe with waffle sole, Vans produces skateboarding, old school and classic sneakers, socks, watches, accessories, hoodies, jackets, pants, shorts, board shorts, sandals, and tees. For women, Vans has a line for swimwear, underwear, tanks, and dresses. Its appeal lie in its simplicity, which exudes the “Southern California culture of music, art, action sports, street culture, all wrapped together around basic-looking shoes.”
In 1994, Vans sponsored the Inaugural Triple Crown series, which was renamed into the Vans Triple Crown series. The competition includes events in skateboarding, BMX, surfing, wakeboarding, snowboarding, motocross, and super cross. The Vans brand had also collaborated with Marc Jacobs, Wtaps, Supreme, Paul Frank, Stussy, Christian Hosoi, Jason Jesse, and Mr. Cartoon.
Among the many celebrities that wore Vans are Taylor Swift, Owen Wilson, Zac Hanson, Lucy Liu, Justin Long, and Zac Efron. Jessica Biel, Hugh Jackman, Ashley Olsen, and Jason Segal were also spotted sporting a Vans sneakers.
Vans had evolved to a classic shoe, one that is wearable across all ages. Its laid-back and posh look makes it a staple among the young and the not-so-young, the sporty, and the fashionable. The Vans official website is www.vans.com.
