Andreea Rosso – the man behind 55DSL.

55DSL is a serious mix between active sports and Do It Yourself attitude. With an impressive legacy to uphold, the unconventional label has big plans for the future. 55DSL aims to subjugate young men and women with outstanding apparel and thus “become the most famous fashion option in streetwear”. 55DSL was born as an experimental line for Diesel S.p.A, which is an Italian design company renowned world wide for its outstanding denim creations.  55DSL began its assault on Fashion citadel in 1994 with a bold urban fashion collection called “FW94, Subzero Winter” – a male collection consisting of 55 pieces in total.

From the beginnings of the label until now, the Creative Director of 55DSL was and is Andrea Rosso, son of Diesel creator Renzo Rosso (born in 1955). Andrea boldly combined street outlook, radical sport and his own experience in the realm of fashion and textiles in order to create an entirely new concept and streetwear company. FW94’s Subzero Winter Collection was a tribute to Andrea’s passions – snow, surf and skate. However, as the label evolved, it began to draw inspiration more and more from urban culture.

55DSL continued to function under the protective wings of Diesel until 1999.  Five years were enough for 55DSL to mature and develop a unique feeling and personality. That is why the label became an independent business and moved its headquarters from Italy to Balerna, Switzerland. 55DSL returned on the warm soil of Italy six years later, in 2005. Today the 55DSL brand is a multinational business which is rapidly conquering US and other markets.

All 55DSL’s apparels are retaining Diesel’s quality and high aesthetics while being designed to resist the toughest elements. 55DSL uses only the most practical fabrics and comfortable design to achieve the perfect garments for the young men and women with an active lifestyle. Robert McCaffery, vice president of sales for Diesel USA, confirms the differences between 55DSL and Diesel. “It’s really authentic. For example, if you’re really going to snowboard, you’ll have functional products with the way the zippers are and the water-repellent fabrics – things like that make it slightly different from Diesel.”

Furthermore, 55DSL keeps the pace with technological developments and urban lifestyle by incorporating various ingenious features to their garments. For example, some streetwear has an i-Pod pocket with an internal “route” for cables inside the jacket.
