Champion clothing. Hoodies, sweatshirts and jackets. History of Champion.
True to its name, Champion is the champion when it comes to comfortable sportswear. It is the second-largest subsidiary of Hanes Brands Inc., a company that is a part of the Sara Lee Corporation.
It was 1919 when brothers Abe and Bill Feinbloom created the Knickerbocker Knitting Company. Within the following decade, the brothers managed to convince the officials at the Wetworth Military Academy to try out their apparel – the very first sweatshirt. From 1920-1930, the Feinblooms’ sweatshirts became the outerwear of choice for both military academies and universities. It was then that the Champion label was born.
In 1938, Champion invented the Reverse Weave technique, which makes all its garments–specifically its trademark sweatshirts–strong and durable, without the possibility of shrinking even from repeated washes. The company also introduced the nylon mesh, which were incorporated in all NBA uniforms.
Champion now
Since then, the brand has been the pioneer of reversible t-shirts, the sports bra, and the breathable mesh textile. For over 90 years, Champion has provided comfortable yet stylish clothes for the active men, women, and kids.
The first breathable mesh shorts were created by Champion. This innovative sportswear kept athletes cool and comfortable no matter how sweaty or hot they may be. Now, Champion’s trademark mesh shorts continue to be the choice for athletes.
In the late 1980s the company broke new ground in the women’s department when they introduced the comfortable sports bra. This was named the Champion Jogbra (now known as the Action Tech Bra). From then on out, the brand’s sports bras have provided great support, reduced the production of sweat, and provided control because of its stay-put racer back straps, inner linings, non-chafing materials, and four-way stretch design. In the company’s fervor of creating comfortable intimates for the athletic women, Champion has now produced 30 sports bras, from sizes 32 A to 44 DDD. Each is specialized for every level of activity.
Truly an originator when it comes to comfortable sportswear, Champion has also developed the Double Dry sportswear for men and women. It helps them achieve drier workouts and cool-downs with the sportswear’s materials that help control moisture buildup and sweat. The company also manufactures underwear and socks that have the dependable moisture-wicking feature.
Since the 1990’s, this sportswear company has carved a niche in the hip hop and urban scene because of its hooded sweatshirts. This popularity all started when the company produced fleeced sweatshirts for football teams.
These hooded sweatshirts were made famous by New York-based rappers like Mobb Depp, Ill Al Skratch, and a Tribe Called Quest who often wore them in their concerts and music videos. The tradition hasn’t faded since, with modern rappers Fat Joe, 50 Cent, The Game, and Ghostface Killah who have worn the same Champion hooded sweatshirts throughout their career. Because of the hooded sweatshirt’s affinity to the hip hop lifestyle, a lot of rappers have mentioned the brand in their songs. In 2003, Nas cited Champion in DJ Kayslay’s “Too Much for Me,” wherein he rapped about being a “braveheart in Carhartt and Champion hoodies.”
Because of its hip hop infamy, Champion’s “Superhood” became the unofficial hoodie of urban fashionistas in the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and NYC. The hoodies, which come in a variety of shades, have been mixed and matched with hats and sneakers. In fact, a lot of stores have manufactured New Era Hats to compliment the colors of Champion’s Superhoods. Aside from their vibrant colors, Champion’s hoodies continue to be bestsellers because of its durability, comfort, and style.
Sponsorships
Champion was the official sponsor of the National Basketball Association (NBA) from the 1990 to 2000. The brand also manufactured sportswear for a lot of colleges and universities.
Since 2008, Champion has produced kits and uniforms for Premier League teams such as Wigan Athletic F.C. and the Wales National Football Team.
Currently, the Champion Team Uniforms Department supplies uniforms and apparels to over 2,500 sports associations across the globe.
Because of its pioneer apparels, it has helped each man, woman, and kid live an active lifestyle more comfortably. It’s no doubt that the Champion brand has pioneered the way the world wears active wear.
