The beginnings were hard. The Dalmau brothers were new to the fashion industry. However, they pursued their goal boldly. They started learning all about print methods and finishings. They put a lot of time and effort in researching the use of colors and unseen funky tee designs. And they succeeded! First with men’s apparel, then with women’s garments and accessories.

Their first collection was showcased at the 1997 New York fashion week. Bright, high quality tees and shirts with a highly imaginative twist in design entered the spotlight. It was a courageous move, because at the time minimalism was ruling the fashion world. Nevertheless, the Dalmau brothers succeeded in making a great entrance and a huge buzz. Syl Tang, fashion journalist, reporting from New York Fashion Week commented on Custo Barcelona’s first collection. “Flashy. Cool. The look is Faye Dunaway gone British urchin meets 1970´s housecoat prints!”

What followed was hailed as “Customania” by the USA market and press. The colorful designs dyed in humor and creativity captured the attention and imagination of the entire world. The name Custo was chosen by David and Custodio for their fashion brand because of its exotic resonances. It surely sounds more striking than David Barcelona.

And so it was that Custo Barcelona became renowned for its bold and unique designs. Custo Barcelona received a lot of glitter from celebrity endorsement. Julia Roberts, Penelope Cruz and the Backstreet Boys to name but a few were the famous people who wear and promote Custo Barcelona. The brand creations also featured in popular TV series like Friends and Sex and the City.
