Diesel is a brand that is has gained a huge part in youth culture and urban fashion. Diesel’s history as an emblematic fashion brand began in 1978 in Molvena in northern Italy. Then, Renzo Rosso and Adriano Goldschmied founded the company with the sole aim of making it a leader in the world of fashionable clothing and accessories. In 1985, Renzo acquired the entire Diesel brand from Adriano Goldschmied. Becoming the sole owner of the company, Renzo moved forward to build upon the Diesel brand. In 1988 Renzo hires virtuoso designer Wilbert Das straight out of fashion college. Now, Wilbert Das is head designer and creative director of Diesel.
Diesel began its assault on the international market in 1991 with a brilliant market strategy that made the brand grew stronger with every year. The event which marked the success of the label on American soil was the opening of Diesel’s flagship store on Lexington Avenue in New York City in 1996. Another good year in the history of Diesel was 2007, when the brand released a key beachwear and intimates line for both men and women and its luxury Black Gold Collection.
Along with Diesel’s main lines, the brand also offers a children’s collection called Diesel Kid and limited editions of vintage and special denim. Diesel is a brand that enjoys collaborating with big names of the fashion industry. For example, Diesel sells eyewear made in collaboration with Safilo, fragrances made with L’Oreal and jewelry and watches made with Fossil. In 2008, Diesel teamed up with Adidas to launch Adidas Originals Denim by Diesel.
Although Diesel’s headquarters are in Italy, the company has more than 2,200 employees in 18 subsidiaries across Europe, Asia and the Americas. Diesel apparel and accessories are loved and bought in more than 80 countries worldwide. In addition, Diesel products are available in over 5,000 retail stores of which 300 are Diesel outlets.

As it grows stronger in the fashion industry, Diesel also tries to leave its mark on society by endorsing young creative minds and getting involved in charity events. Diesel sponsored Diesel-U-Music Contest and was the founding partner of International Talent Support. Diesel has also offered creative and financial support to the 2005 edition of Vienna’s Life Ball AIDS charity and to the Sundance Film Festival.
