French Connection’s head turning windows.
FCUK Fashion! This naughty slogan made French Connection is a scandalous hit in the fashion industry. FCUK is a clever and coincidental anagram of French Connection United Kingdom. This brilliant marketing strategy was adopted by Stephen Marks (owner and founder of French Connection) in 1997.
Stephen Marks abandoned a promising career in tennis to dedicate himself entirely to the fashion industry. He was an ambitious man that wanted to succeed on his own. And after some successful ventures, he founded French Connection in 1972. The name of the brand was “thought up in a car parked at the back of the Palladium”. French Connection grew slowly but steady. Stephen’s first shop was located in London’s Walton Street and was called Cane. His second shop was called Friends and opened to the public in South Molton Street. French Connection became more influential on the fashion scene in the late 1970s, when it started trading inside Top Shop.
However, the real French Connection frenzy started in 1997. The company used to send faxes from their UK offices to Hong Kong office using the abbreviation FCUK. Stephen Marks tells how this mundane detail started the ingenious marketing and advertising campaign that skyrocketed French Connection’s popularity. “There was no thought of it being rude, but advertising executive Trevor Beattie picked up on the abbreviation and came up with the fcuk fashion slogan. I thought it was bloody marvelous. We didn’t even have an advertising budget at that time, but within four weeks we had the posters up and the rest is history.” Indeed, tees with messages like “fcuk this”, “hot as fcuk”, “mile high fcuk”, “too busy to fcuk”, “lucky fcuk”, “fcuk on the beach” are now part of urban fashion history.

French Connection – great styles for both men and women.
Today French Connection has over 65 stores in United Kingdom, 25 stores in USA and many more franchises all over Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Australia. French Connection is a clothing brand that creates products for the fashion-orientated high street retail market. Thus, the label offers only fashion forward garments and accessories at affordable prices. French Connection targets men and women ages 18 to 35 who appreciate that the label stays on the cutting edge of street fashion.
Many celebrities such as Katrina Bowden, Taylor Swift, Ashley Rickards, Lauren London, Sophia Bush and Hayden Panettiere like to use the “FCUK” word when talking about their wardrobe. What about you? Are you ready for some FCUK Fashion?
