J. Lindeberg brand was founded in 1996 by Johan Lindeberg who resigned from his position as marketing director at Diesel to pursue his own dream. The concept that drives the label was envisaged by Johan while riding his motorcycle on a road trip through Europe. He visualized a fashion line that echoed his personal and creative identity, a line that was completely new and capable of revolutionizing fashion industry.

In the summer of 1996, the brand was launched simultaneously in Stockholm and New York. Johan was not alone in his fashion venture. Some investors believed in his clothing line and helped the company jump to a great start. With himself as creative director, Johan gathered a small but highly creative team of designers leaded by Roland Hjort, former designer at the Swedish clothing brand H&M.

Johan wanted to leave behind his past in denim industry and start fresh. That’s why he wanted J. Lindeberg to be more than a denim brand. Therefore, the first J. Lindeberg collection had a 1960’s rock and roll feel to it. The collection was called 21st Century Lifestyle and was showcased in New York Fashion Week in the Fall of 1997 Season. J. Lindeberg’s first line featured men’s fashion and golf clothing and was an instant hit. The golf collection was highly acclaimed by active sports fashion enthusiasts and was advertised by maverick PGA-tour golfer, Jesper Parnevik.

J. Lindeberg brand developed quickly and gained many awards and prizes from the fashion industry. In 1999, Swedish Elle Magazine presented J. Lindeberg with the Designer of the Year award. The following year, the label was awarded the prestigious Guldknappen (golden button) for Most Innovative Designer. But it was in the year 2000 that J. Lindeberg found much success. The brand opened flagship stores in major cities around the world – Stockhlom, New York, Tokyo, Yokohama and Los Angeles. In 2002, J. Lindeberg entered the world of high-end fashion by taking part for the first time to the New York Fashion Week in Bryant Park. Later in 2002, Johan and his wife Marcella launched the first J. Lindeberg Women’s Collection and full denim line for both men and women.  Other later additions to J. Lindeberg’s lines were the J. Lindeberg Future Sports and J. Lindeberg Ski Collection.

Other than the label’s numerous awards, the brand is highly appreciated by Hollywood stars and music celebrities. J. Lindeberg has been worn on the red carpet by Brad Pitt, Bono, The Killers, Justin Timberlake and Jane’s Addiction, among others.
