Jean’s Paul Gaultier

Jean-Paul Gaultier – the fashion master behind Jean’s Paul Gaultier label.
Jean’s Paul Gaultier denim and street apparel line is part of the outrageous, but always fascinating world of famous French haute couture fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier. Jean-Paul Gaultier creates clothing to break sacred fashion conventions and fulfill his obsessions. But what is most importantly, he creates for our pleasure. And Jean’s Paul Gaultier line retains the sexy and irreverent Gaultier’s style and at the same time remains wearable and highly comfortable.
Jean’s Paul Gaultier label is just one of the many high fashion labels created by Gaultier. In order to understand how progressive Jean’s Paul Gaultier garments are, we must first understand the designer himself. Jean-Paul Gaultier was born in the suburbs of Paris in 1952 with a mad passion for fashion. As a child, he never indulged himself in the usual childhood pleasures. His mind was set only on designing clothes. At age 13, he designed a full collection of clothing for his mother and grandmother. And when he reached the age of 17, Gaultier boldly sent his design sketches to famous couture stylists in Paris. The avant-garde designer Pierre Cardin recognized the brilliance of young Gaultier and hired him as his design assistant in 1970. Gaultier worked with Pierre Cardin for two years and then designed one year for Jacques Esterel before joining the House of Patou where he worked for three years with designers Angelo Tarlazzi and Michael Goma.
Jean-Paul Gaultier released his first collection in 1976. However, it wasn’t until 1981 when he began to showcase the irreverent style for which he is best known today. Moreover, Gaultier has for a long time the reputation of an enfant terrible because of his daring fashion experiments, which includes his own spin on men’s fashion. He strongly advocates the use of skirts, especially kilts on his men’s wardrobe. Although Gaultier gained world fame through his haute couture line in 1997, he designed many collections based on the streetwear culture. Many of his haute couture collections were very formal and yet succeed to shock through an unusual playful spirit. The collections designed for the street retain the eccentricity of Gaultier while at the same time remaining comfortable.

So in 2004 the Jean’s Paul Gaultier label was launched. Jean’s Paul Gaultier is a line that encompasses the designer’s concept of fluidity of the sexes as featured in his haute couture collections. Denim and more simply styled garments bear street culture influences are designed to be stylish and ready to wear anytime, anywhere. This is what Gaultier wanted to convey in this collection – and he succeeded.
Other than Gaultier’s different lines, Jean-Paul Gaultier also creates unique garments for super-stars. He is responsible for the sculpted costumes of Madonna during the 90’s and for the infamous outfits worn by rocker Marilyn Manson. Other artists for whom he designed are Mylene Farmer, Kylie Minogue and Leslie Cheung. Gaultier is also famous for designing the wardrobe of many motion pictures, including Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element, Pedro Almodóvar’s Kika, Peter Greenaway’s The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover, and Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s La Cité des enfants perdus (The City of Lost Children).
