Karlo Reyes – the man behind Jeepney.
If you’re feeling down you can take a ride with Jeepney – a Seattle based streetwear label that prides itself being a mobile collection of street art and various decorative motifs. In fact, the philosophy which powers Jeepney is all about riding in style. Fashion is the vehicle employed by Jeepney to transmit fresh ideas that have universal appeal and go beyond any borders, directly into the global market.
Karlo Reyes is the man who introduced Jeepney to the world straight from the hot streets of Metro Manila. That is why the name of the label is meant to evoke cultural rich Filipino flavors. In the Philippines, Jeepney is a popular means of transportation. After World War II, the abandoned American G.I. Jeeps were transformed into public utility vehicles and adorned with spectacular bright colors and unique artwork. Jeepney’s have become a trademark of the Philippines and a successful streetwear brand based in Seattle.
In 2003, Karlo Reyes made some tees for a community festival. His creations were a hit and he instantly realized that he could turn his passion for fashion and design into a lucrative business. Karlo graduated from the Visual Communications Design program at the University of Washington and he already owned a design firm before launching Jeepney streetwear brand. Karlo partnered with Rex Korrell and officially started to produce Jeepney garments late in 2003. The rest is history.
A small and highly creative team runs Jeepney. Karlo Reyes (CEO and Creative Director), Rex Korrell (CEO and Sales Manager), Ramil Azucena (Graphic Designer), David Gavino (Graphic Designer), Alana Garcia (Marketing) and Nicole Anselmo (Operations) are all working together to ensure the brand’s success. Karlo explains why the brand has become so popular. “We like to use humor and with a deeper concept with most of our designs. We don’t like just putting an image on a tee and calling it a day. We’re not afraid to take risks either, which makes for a much more interesting brand. Plus we’re always trying to put some focus on the Filipino culture without having it just for Filipinos so that’s always on our shoulders as well.”
Jeepney tees and shirts are desired by ordinary people as well as celebrities. Twitch from “So You Think You Can Dance” and many others from American Best Dance Crew (Boogie Bots, So Real Crew) are wearing the stuff made by Jeepney. There is also Kanye West, Black Eyed Peas, The Cool Kids, 106 & Park hosts and the list is endless. The guys at Jeepney constantly see their creations on TV.
Jeepney has just ended a successful fashion project made in collaboration with another successful streetwear label – Once Upon a Time. Currently, the guys at Jeepney are very busy. They are collaborating with Karmaloop, Antenna Magazine and Urb Magazine. These guys are full of surprises, so keep your eyes peeled.

Jeepney and Once Upon a Time joined forces to bring you We Run Manila Tee.
