If you really want to wear one of a kind garments that really make you pop out in a crowd, then meet Kidrobot. Operating out of stores and galleries in New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Miami, the Kidrobot line was unleashed from a demented parallel universe on the streets in 2006 by designer Paul Budnitz. Produced in limited quantities, the unique apparel is based on the quirky, colorful characters and logos that fans of the Kidrobot vinyl toy series have come to know and love.

Kidrobot started to grow out of the mind of artist and entrepreneur Paul Budnitz into a business and cultural phenomenon in 2002. However, with such an odd business idea, the beginnings were hard and Paul is the first to admit it. “It was pretty tough at the beginning explaining to people what my company actually was going to do.  ‘I am creating a company called Kidrobot, which will sell limited edition vinyl toys, designed by graffiti artists, poster artists, and fashion designers, to adults for inordinate sums of money.’  Try bringing that to a bank for a loan!”

Nonetheless, Paul did manage to find some investors for Kidrobot. One of the early investors even said to him: “I have no idea what I’m investing in, Paul. But you’re really, really convincing so here’s a check.” And, what at its inception seemed an absurd business idea, soon turned into an urban culture phenomenon. Because now, Kidrobot merges urban street trends, fashion and pop art to produce limited edition, collectible toys and apparel that are sought after all over the world.

What’s more, all Kidrobot unique products feature powerful collaborations with international artists who are famous for creating artwork in diverse mediums, including graffiti, fashion, music, graphic design, fine art, industrial design and illustration. Contributing artists include Swizz Beatz, Ed Templeton, Mike Shinoda (Linkin Park, Fort Minor), Shepard Fairey (Obey Giant), Futura 2000 (Mo’Wax), Jamie Hewlett (Tank Girl, Gorillaz), MF DOOM (Madvillain), Huck Gee and Mark Hoppus (blink-182, Atticus).

In 2006, in addition to creating cool toys and dolls, Kidrobot started to produce cool limited edition streetwear, mainly screen-printed tees and hoodies featuring Kidrobot characters. The garments were and are produced typically in editions of 256 pieces. Kidrobot is now more popular than ever with fashion enthusiasts, so collaboration with big companies such as Lacoste and artist such as Tilt ame as no surprise. Lacoste and Kidrobot are producing together limited edition sneakers with Kidrobot’s trademark of flamboyant colors and designs. Kidrobot also makes monogram bags with the artist Tilt.
