Lacoste’s hip hop and urban clothing line now offers accessories, footwear, hoodies, jeans and pants, outerwear, shirts, and shorts.
Having evolved from an exclusive tennis apparel brand in 1933, Lacoste now leads the fashion market with its extensive lines of footwear, perfumes, leather goods, watches, eye wear, and high quality clothing.
Lacoste takes its name from René Lacoste, a world renowned tennis player and sports enthusiast. In René’s time, he was not fond of traditional tennis shirts, so he paired up with Andre Gillier (owner of the largest knitwear company in France) to create a knitted cotton pique shirt that transformed and revolutionized the sportswear market.

The signature Lacoste crocodile.
The company is most notably associated with its green crocodile logo. This famous crocodile refers to René Lacoste himself, who was dubbed with the nickname “The Crocodile” after he made a bet with the Captain of the French Davis Cup team. The Captain promised that if René won a match, he would give him a crocodile skin suitcase. Robert George, a friend of Renés, drew a crocodile that was embroidered on the blazer which René wore on the court. The American public stuck with this nickname from then on out and the rest is history.
This began the historical rise of Lacoste. The lightly knitted fabric that the company used, called jersey petit pique, is unique in that it moves moisture away from the body. It was the very first time that performance clothing made an appearance in the field of sports.

Lacoste appeals to the hip hop crowd by adding products like hoodies.
In 1963, the company’s management was taken over by René’s son Bernard Lacoste. He turned the family sportswear business into a major billion-dollar apparel company. The company sold more than 300 million shirts by 1995. These days, the crocodile logo can be found on many products including swimsuits, track pants, caps, belts, gloves, shoes and fragrances.
Lacoste clothing lines have the character of being culturally preppy, but they are also renowned for being luxurious and classical. For fashion forward consumers, the brand’s quality materials combined with its exceptional standards continues to become relevant in the market. These days, Lacoste goes beyond many different styles from traditional and contemporary to urban. Lacoste’s hip hop and urban clothing line now offers accessories, footwear, hoodies, jeans and pants, outerwear, shirts, and shorts.
For over 75 years the French brand has been the major leader behind fashionable sports wear. Lacoste is now launching a new line of collectible series inspired from their Tennis and Yachting heritage to celebrate the company’s 75 years of excellence and style.
