Married to the Mob is a clothing collection designed for women by women. This spunky line was conceptualized one hot summer day in 2004 by Leah McSweeny, who realized that there were no great street wear brands for females in the market.
“Guys had Supreme, they had Alife, they have all these other dope brands, but there was nothing there for the girls,” 25-year-old Leah told Format Magazine. The line, nicknamed MOB or MTTM, was created in order to create a cool counterpart for a number of hip men’s lines.
This unique clothing line is more than just pieces from any other women’s clothing brand. The “MOB” which stands for: Most Official Bitches, is Leah’s tribute to the confident and stylish women of New York.
But Married to the Mob almost didn’t become a clothing line. According to Leah, a handful of people were dead set on foiling the MTTM plans. She adds that “there were people that didn’t like girls coming in on the scene and doing our thing.” Yet this inspired Leah to do it even more. The criticisms inspired her to work harder for the line.
Although she had some experience in styling in the past, Leah was essentially a newcomer in the industry. But the native New Yorker took on the project with wholeheartedly.
Her inspiration for her clothing comes from the city itself. This is what Leah had to say about her line: “I put out what I like. I have distinct tastes in what I like and what I don’t like and it all has to do with where I’ve grown up, different things I’ve been through, how I like to dress and the women I look up to and how they dress, who they are, what they do and what they like.”
This design aesthetic – coupled with hardcore personalities that define the female New Yorker has helped transform Married to the Mob into an extraordinary clothing collection. As Leah puts it, “there are definitely elements of street in us.”
Like her clothes – Leah is bullheaded when it comes to expressing the importance of originality. She expresses, “there are very few companies doing refreshing things right now. And those are the companies that will make it, the rest will run out of money and fold out.”
Although its inspiration drew from its New York roots, Married to the Mob has found itself very popular internationally. With such style emanating to every part of the globe, the brand’s chic clothes and accessories have found their way on the pages of international print media such as French magazines Uno, Jalouse and Playboy and Japanese magazines Warp and Friday. As the brand continues to grow, the company continues to develop an international distribution channel for its unique and exclusive street wear apparel.
Stateside, the company has also appeared on a number of famous national magazines such as Elle, Vogue, XXL, and Right On! True enough, Married to the Mob inspires any urban wear loving females because it’s more than a clothing label – it’s a lifestyle that speaks to style for all women everywhere.
