Streetwear by Nikita. History of Nikita clothing.

Heida Birgisdottir, founder and designer of Nikita, is also one of the brand’s sporty muses.
Female snowboarders and skiers before could only gasp at the sight of boring and unflattering outfits that are good enough to wear on the slopes. But with the birth of Nikita, the brainchild of Heida Birgisdottir, snow wear (and street wear) has just got a whole lot funkier.
As a resident snowboarder of her native Iceland, Heida understood the fashion needs of sophisticated femmes, without foregoing the clothes’ quality and durability in extreme locations.
In her desire to wear trendy active wear clothing, Heida made some pieces for herself and her friends. Her little audience clamored for her clothes, so she decided to start Nikita in 2000 after selling her quaint clothing shop in Reykjavik. Heida envisioned Nikita to be a line that “offers something new for the growing group of girl customers that not only wanted to get girl specific boards, boots, and bindings, but also clothes,” Heida told circusmedia.com.
Being the only street wear label from Iceland, Nikita has come a long way since it was founded 9 years ago. Now, the label carries over 100 street wear garments, ranging from Jackets, Pants, Fleece, Denim, Dresses, Skirts, Tops, Knits, Hoodies, Basic Hoodies, Tees, Beanies, Scarves, Belts, to Bags. Since these garments are purposively made for active women, unique and functional features – such as short cap rims, toggles, pockets, stylish zippers, and unique button locations – are not neglected.

With these fashionable active wears, every girl would want to “ride” from here on out!
As founder and co-designer of Nikita, Heida plays a big part in the design process. Her love for fashion and design (which came in second after she got involved with riding), became a perfect mix as soon as Heida combined the two.
Unlike other designers, Heida draws inspiration from something old.
Helping her out is Co-founder Runar Omarsson, who attributes Nikita’s design philosophy to their humble roots. He tells labelnetwork.com that “It could be because we’re from a small country and have a different way of looking at things. We think of making things for the world, internationally, right off the bat because of where we live.”
Although the colors and cuts are vital ingredients in making a perfect garment, she makes sure not to compromise the comfort of the wearer. In fact, Nikita can make comfortable, stylish active wear in all palettes – browns, oranges, greens, pale pinks, even including black, which is a hit-and-miss color for the curvaceous female form.
Additionally, Heida also takes into consideration how her garments can be dressed up or down with other Nikita clothes. She doesn’t try to peer in other designer’s designs because these might skulk in her head, however uninvited. Same as she were when she and Runar started the line in 2000, Heida continues to make pieces out of passion.
True to her goal of dressing active women, Nikita’s models do not include skinny, size 0 muses, but real active girls like professional snowboarders, surfers, skaters, DJs, and Musicians. Nikita’s streetwear models include Gabby Maiden (US), Mimi Knoop (US), Izabelle Desjarins (Canada), Lisa Filzmoser (Austria), Natasza Zurek (Poland), and Rafaele Deguehegny (France). Outerwear models include Alice Gong (US), Clair Bidez (US), Jordie Karlinski (US), Maribeth Swetkoff (US), Vera Janssen (Germany) Ana Rumiha (Croatia), Julia Baumgartner (Austria), and Magalie Dubois (Canada). Other Nikita muses include skateboarder Lucy Adams (UK), snowboarders Keiko Yanagisawa (Japan), Christel Thoreson (Norway), Hanna Teter (US), Priscilla Levak (Canada) and Minna Hesso (Finland). Heck, owner-slash-designer Heida, is a true NIkita model herself, for she is Iceland’s snowboarding and motocross champ! Nikita also sponsors Estelle, a UK-based musician.

Nikita: street wear and so much more.
Despite tailor-engineering her clothes for active lifestyles, a lot of Nikita pieces – such as halter tops, dresses, jackets and skirts can actually be worn on a date or a party. Yes, there are a lot of trendy Nikita clothes many girls would like to wear, although unfortunately they are not for everyone. However the label tries its best on creating tasteful clothes for “girls who ride.”
In the spirit of keeping up the tradition of an active lifestyle, Nikita sponsors extreme sports events such as “Nikita Chickita 2009,” a snowboarding competition with a 1-year Nikita sponsorship at stake for amateurs. Marley Colt, a 17-year-old Utah native, wounded up victorious at the estrogen-packed competition held at Mammoth, South Park.
Nikita has also transcended its fashion influence to the world of gaming by dressing up the players of Stoked, an X-Box 360 snowboarding game.
Outside its active lifestyle endeavors, Nikita continues to cater to the ever-growing needs of chic active women out there by releasing two collections annually. Nikita is available in about 30 countries, including North America, Europe, Japan, and of course, Nikita’s hometown of Iceland.
