Burden Clothing
SoJones met up with Omar Ellis, owner / designer of Burden Clothing, a new streetwear with a thick Caribbean flavor. With co-founder Dom Gautier, Ellis sends strong messages behind the graphic work making Burden Clothing almost destined to become a one of a kind clothing line.

While some styles have a true contemporary feel, some of Burden Clothing’s best designs combine Caribbean cultural elements such as masks. Beyond the graphics, Burden Clothing also celebrates the great Caribbean heroes including reggae singer Bob Marley, Pan-Africanist Marcus Garvey, Neo-expressionist artist Jean-Michel Basquiat and also the great Cuban salsa singer, Celia Cruz. As stated on their website:
From what was once the “White Man’s Burden” has arisen the greatness of an Afro-Caribbean people, who have not only impacted their own cultures but the world as a whole.
Through our great heroes, Caribbean people can stand up and be accounted for. They are proof that from desolate, desperate situations can come dominance, excellence and glory.
Burden Clothing is about moving forward while bringing the best of our past with us.
Although still revolves around graphic-printed tees for both its men and women’s lines, Burden Clothing has offered a new taste in streetwear. Will they do a good cut and sew pieces? Maybe. Would be brilliant to see them combined with the edgy illustration and words.
The label has also taken their social responsibility back to their roots in Africa, to donate clothes. Here are a few pics of the positivity.
