SoJones took a minute with hip hop artist Nelly recently in Las Vegas to talk about the latest Apple Bottoms womenswear collection, his ideal Apple Bottoms woman (!) and hints at his plans for this year.

Apple Bottoms was launched in 2003 by Nelly and two partners, and although the denim market has always been tough to break into, Apple Bottoms flew off the shelves thanks to a combination of Nelly’s support and signature styling: apple-shaped back pockets paired with a reputation for fitting and enhancing a woman’s backside.

Apple Bottoms has since evolved into a lifestyle brand, now offering a full range of womenswear apparel, footwear, a fragrance introduced last year, accessories and children’s clothing.

Cornell “Nelly” Haynes first exploded on the scene with his debut album “Country Grammar” which debuted at #3 on Billboard’s top 200 and went multiple platinum. He has since revealed himself to be hip hop’s renaissance man, involved in a wide-range of disciplines such as acting, poker and charity work, to business ventures in energy drinks, basketball franchises, apparel companies and record labels.

In his early years Nelly had to make a choice between playing baseball for the majors or pursuing a music career. We’re sure we can speak for the ladies and/or anyone who’s gotten down to “Nellyville” or “Roc the Mike”: we’re glad he chose the latter.

Nelly’s last single “Party People” with Fergie was a monster hit in 2008. But what has he been up to lately? As he alludes to in our interview, Nelly’s next album is set to launch later this year, and the artwork for it has already been leaked: a  murdered out (slang for all black) 2011 Mustang GT, customized by the experts over at DUB.

And you sports fans know Nelly is a true sports fanatic and has the skills to back it up as well: he was actually being scouted for baseball before landing his feet in the music industry. Last month he was a field correspondent for ESPN during the Super Bowl extravaganza, interviewing sports stars and artists such as Serena Williams, Ne-Yo and Terrell Owens in a pimped out 25,000 square foot tent.

In addition to being a fun-loving guy, Nelly is serious about giving back and has both founded and teamed up with various charities. Nelly is actively involved in a mission to help educate African Americans and other minorities about the importance and the need for bone marrow donors, and registers potential donors in the process.

Nelly runs a non-profit organization called the “4Sho4Kids Foundation.” He also runs the “Jes Us 4 Jackie” campaign, which began in March 2003 by Nelly and his sister Jackie Donahue.

Even Nelly knows that your time is the most valuable gift you can give someone.
